Debian and self-hosting: getting started

This section is for practical Debian server notes and the services running on top of them. The existing Nextcloud Installation on Debian 12 article is the first detailed guide.

Before following a guide

Write down the Debian release, the service version and whether the system is a physical host, a virtual machine or a container. Keep a copy of the configuration you are about to change and know how to recover access if the service does not start.

Keep a small change record

  1. Describe the starting system and the result you want.
  2. Record the configuration changes and their purpose.
  3. Check the service status and the relevant logs.
  4. Record what worked and how to undo the change.

Ask in the right place

Use the Debian forum for installation and maintenance questions, self-hosted services and networking, or virtualization and backups. Include the exact error and a short, redacted log excerpt. Do not post passwords, access tokens or private user data.
